This is a comic I illustrated for the LA times newsletter: The Latinx Files.

I had recently visited my grandparents’ house and for the first time and was introduced to parts of my family that had been a mystery to me. I chose to depict an interaction I had with my grandfather and hearing him talk about his mother for the first time. It is beautiful and painful to hear the similarities you have with family members you can never meet.

Although separated by the border wall, Mexican culture runs deep in towns like Anthony. Anthony is a city in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The population is 9,360 as of 2010. It is located on the New Mexico–Texas state line in the Upper Mesilla Valley, on Interstate 10, 18 miles north of El Paso and 28 minutes from the US-Mexican border. Anthony is technically separated into two towns, one half in Texas and the other half in New Mexico. Similar to many border towns its population is made up of mostly Mexican immigrants, many of whom work in agriculture. My family has lived on the border of Mexico and the US for generations, towns that were once part of Mexican territory are now part of the US. What was once a border that was easy to go to and from is now a hard border wall.

I wanted to investigate the culture that has been cultivated by Mexican families living on the border through the personal experiences of my own family. I wanted to visualize the landscape my family inhabits and the invisible and natural borders that separate them mostly through the childhood experiences of my dad and uncles and my own experiences being brought to Anthony as a child.

Illustrations were created digitally with procreate.
